Youth Squad coaches Sara & Lee receiving Lottery funding with Victoria Pendleton
Sponsored by Optimum
The GKV Youth Squad is our section for children aged 6-14 years old. We run skills sessions on Saturday morning from late Spring to the end of the Autumn focussing on core bike handling techniques. There is usually a session for children aged 6-8 and one for 9 and above.
The Youth Squad is an accredited British Cycling Go Ride Club and has also achieved Clubmark accreditation. This means the club has achieved the British Cycling standards for safeguarding young people, sports equity, club management and coaching. The club has five British Cycling accredited coaches who take turns coaching the Saturday morning sessions.
The Youth Squad season is divided into three discipline-specific coaching periods of six weeks each. At the end of each discipline-specific six week period we run a club competition where the children have a chance to compete against each other using their new skills and techniques.
- Mid-June to July: Cycle cross
- Aug to mid-Sept: Grass track
- Mid-Sept to Oct: Mountain biking
Sessions cost £2 for non-members to join and £1.50 for members.
Seasonal membership of the Youth Squad is £6.
Bikes can be loaned to riders during the session if they have no access to their own.
The sessions take place in the sports grounds to the rear of Glossopdale Community College 10-11am on Saturdays.
GKV has been successful with several Sport England lottery bids. This has funded the education of our coaches and some technical and safety equipment for the Youth Squad. The coaches have also had bike mechanical training and support the children with safety checks on their bikes at the start of sessions.
