2016 Results
Our Autumn Hill Climb Series is a ‘Come & Try It’ event – this means it is open to all-comers and everyone is welcome! You don’t need to be a member of Glossop Kinder Velo Cycling Club or Cycling Time Trials (CTT) although you may want to join us if you get hooked! If you just want to spectate and give vocal support you are more than welcome – please just turn up on the day. If you want to take photos for our club website or help marshal please contact our club event promoter.
What is a Hill Climb?
It is a timed event over a measured course. Hill Climbs vary from short steep ‘sprints’ lasting less than a minute to longer ‘endurance’ events of a few miles in length such a ours. Riders are held at the start and set off at one-minute intervals – the aim is to give it your maximum lung-busting effort! The winner is the rider who records the shortest time – even if you finish many minutes behind the winner you’ll still have the satisfaction of recording a personal best time!
The climb
Holme Moss is an iconic climb for cyclists – ‘our’ side is a 2.2 mile ascent with nearly 900 ft of climbing ramping up to 13%. You have a run up to the foot of the climb but it ramps up immediately so don’t overcook it at the start – it eases after a mile only to ramp up again at the end so keep something in reserve for a final blast to the finish-line!
Where is it?
The start-line is in a lay-by on the A6024 0.5 miles north of the junction with the A628 where there is a lovely view of Torside Valley and Woodhead Reservoir. Please note there is very limited parking at the start so if you come by car, please park at the top of Holme Moss and ride down to the start.
What do I need?
Your can use any type of bike but most riders use standard road bikes – the lighter the better! You will need to wear a helmet and we recommend you use a rear light. You don’t need to worry about your fitness level – just give it your best effort and you’ll have a personal best time to aim for next time!
How do I enter?
The event is held on Saturday mornings at 10am from September to October – check the front page of our club website nearer the time for dates. You don’t need to enter in advance – just come along 30 minutes before the start to give yourself plenty of time to sign in and attach your number to the back of your jersey and left shirt sleeve. You have to be 12 or over and if you are under 18 one of your parents will need to sign a consent form. You pay cash on the day – the cost is £3.00.
Extras!
Everyone congregates at the finish-line to recover, have a chat and hear the official results from the time-keepers – these will also be posted on our Yahoo Group and club website. There may also be photos available to download free of charge after the event! There will be prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd fastest man and woman over the whole Autumn Hill Climb Series – there will also be prizes for the fastest under 18 riders and those crazy enough to ride fixed gear bikes!
There will also be awards for the fastest club riders presented at our annual dinner!
Safety issues
There will be warning signs for motorists and marshals stationed at the start-line and finish-line. Riders must exercise care at all times. All riders are responsible for their own safety and you must obey the Highway Code. Do not cross the white line. A helmet and rear light is recommended. You must look ahead and don’t ride with your head down. You must not take pace or shelter from any other vehicle or competitor – not that drafting helps much up Holme Moss unless there’s a strong headwind!
