Our Summer Time Trial Series is a ‘Come & Try It’ event – this means it is open to all comers and everyone is welcome! You don’t need to be a member of Glossop Kinder Velo Cycling Club or Cycling Time Trials (CTT) although you may want to join us if you get hooked! If you just want to spectate and give vocal support you are more than welcome – please just turn up on the day. If you want to take photos for our club website or help marshal please contact our club event promoter.

What is a Time Trial?

It is a timed event over a measured course. Time Trials are usually held on flat courses over standard distances (10, 25, 50 miles) but there are also quite a few ‘hilly’ Time Trials over non-standard distances such as ours. Riders are held at the start and set off at one-minute intervals – the aim is to give it your maximum lung-busting effort! The winner is the rider who records the shortest time – even if you finish many minutes behind the winner you’ll still have the satisfaction of recording a personal best time!

The course

Bike route 1499101 – powered by Bikemap

The course is picturesque, held over a non-standard distance and quite hllly compared to most Time Trials – it’s a unique challenge over 9 miles with 800 ft of climbing. It begins with a steady one mile ascent through Padfield followed by a 4 mile undulating ride to Woodhead Reservoir. The turn-point is in the car park entrance where there will be a marshal stationed to make sure you don’t take any short-cuts! You then return along Woodhead Road to a downhill finish just before the junction with Cemetery Road.

Where is it?

The start-line is on Padfield Main Road (just up from the Victoria Inn in Hadfield (SK13 1HE) where there is plenty of parking space and a superb view down Torside Valley.

What do I need?

Your can use any type of bike but most riders use standard road bikes with or without tri-bars – specific time trial bikes won’t give you much advantage compared to other flatter and longer courses. You will need to wear a helmet and we recommend you use a rear light. You don’t need to worry about your fitness level – just give it your best effort and you’ll have a personal best time to aim for next time!

How do I enter?

The event is held on Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm from June to August – check out our website for the dates. You don’t need to enter in advance – just come along 30 minutes before the start to give yourself plenty of time to sign in and attach your number to the back of your jersey and right shirt sleeve. You have to be 12 or over and if you are under 18 one of your parents will need to sign a consent form. You pay cash on the day – the cost is only £5.

Everyone congregates at at the Coffee Shop in Wimberry Hill Garden Centre to recover – possibly with a coffee and some cake (bring some extra cash), have a chat and hear the official results from the time-keepers – these will also be posted on our Yahoo Group, club website and published in the Glossop Chronicle. There may also be photos available to download free of charge after the event!  There will be prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd fastest man and woman over the whole Summer Time Trial Series – there will also be prizes for the fastest under 18 riders and those crazy enough to ride fixed gear bikes and tandems!

There will also be awards for the fastest club riders presented at our annual dinner!

Safety issues

There will be warning signs for motorists at the start-line, junction of Padfield Main Road and Woodhead Road, turn-point and finish-line. There will also be marshals stationed at the start-line, turn-point and finish-line. Riders must exercise care at all times. All riders are responsible for their own safety and you must obey the Highway Code. Do not cross the white line. A helmet and rear light is recommended. You must look ahead and don’t ride with your head down. Finally, you must not take pace or shelter from any other vehicle or competitor – that means no drafting guys!

If you are warming up or cooling down on the course please give way to those racing and please make clear to those at the finish point (when cooling down, that you are no longer racing). Please assemble at at the Coffee Shop in Wimberry Hill Garden Centre after you have finished. Due to large numbers of riders please do not gather at the finish point for safety reasons.

‘Thanks once again. I love the photos on Flickr too’

‘I really enjoyed it. It was my first ever time trial! I’ll definitely be back next week to try and beat my time’

‘Many thanks. Thanks also to everyone who helped out, very enjoyable (I think!)’

‘Thank you – it’s a lovely event and very well organised. My first race for 10 years! Really enjoyed and hope to do another before end of July’

‘It was my first time trial and I thought it was excellent. Such a nice vibe with chatty and relaxed entrants – I was worried it would be rigid and snooty – how wrong I was! Perfect organisation and a complete bargain for £3. I will be back for more of your excellent events’

‘Thanks, a really enjoyable and well organised event’

‘I must say, you organised a great club time trial. A tough (yet pretty) course, great attendance and wonderful cakes and coffee at the finish!

‘Thanks for such a fun event, I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed an event so much – the meeting up at the cafe afterwards is genius, it’s like a race with a cafe stop, it’s a draw just to catch up with friends who I never normally see at the same races as me’
